OBTAINING Your Broker's License
The steps involved in becoming a licensed real estate broker in Florida are as follows:

1. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE - You must presently be one of the following in order to be eligible to take the Florida Broker's Exam:

  FLORIDA SALES ASSOCIATE

a. Presently have an active Real Estate Sales Associate license.

b. Have at least 12 months experience as an active Sales Associate within the five (5) year period immediately preceding taking your Florida state broker exam.

c. Fulfill your Sales Associate post-licensing education requirement.

  OUT-OF-STATE SALES ASSOCIATE OR BROKER

a. May claim the equivalent of the experience listed above if you meet the above requisites (see 1a-c).

b. Have your state licensing agency issue you a written "certification of real estate license history."

d. Submit your "certification of real estate license history" with your state application

2. EDUCATION

a. You must successfully complete a FREC (Florida Real Estate Commission) approved pre-licensing course for Brokers (FREC II) consisting of 72 classroom hours.

b. Tuition for our broker pre-license course is $495.00. A deposit of $100.00 is required the time you make your reservation, and the balance due at the first class. A $50.00 pre-registration discount applies if you pay your tuition in full at time of reservation.

c. Your education is valid for two (2) years; you must take the state broker exam with 2 years of completing the pre-license course in order to receive credit for this course.

d. You may fulfill this education requirement prior to, during, or after your application to the state has been submitted.

3. APPLICATION

a. Submit a complete Application.

b. Submit the proper fingerprint card for the real estate profession (FD-258). This card can be obtained from the State by requesting it be mailed to you from FREC at (850)487-1395 (Extension Selections: 1,1,2, then 2).

c. Submit an application fee for $152.00

d. Mail the Application, fingerprint card, and fee to DBPR (Department of Business & Professional Regulation) at:

DBPR Central Intake Unit
1940 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32399-1027

e. If you have not submitted your application by the time you attend your Broker pre-licensing course at Professional Real Estate Institute, we will assist you in completing and submitting the application to the state!

NOTE: However, we strongly urge you to begin the application process ASAP, since the state takes 4-8 weeks before you receive notification that you are eligible to take the state broker exam. It is highly desirable and to your benefit to minimize the time between completion of your broker course and your state exam.

4. EXAMINATION

a. Once the state processes your application for licensure as a real estate broker, it will authorize you to take the exam. The DRE will give your name and contact information to the company that administers all state exams, ASI (Assessment Systems, Inc.), also called "Promissor."

b. You will receive notification from Promissor (ASI) with a list of exam centers & test schedules.

c. You select the date, time, and location of your exam, and contact Promissor/ASI and make a reservation for taking your Broker exam.

d. You pay ASI/Promissor a testing fee of $45.50 either at the time you make your reservation or at the test site on the day of your exam.

e. Pass the Florida Real Estate Broker Examination with a grade of at least 75.

f. Submit a completed RE 2050-1 form to the state in order to activate your license, otherwise the license is issued in an "inactive status." You can complete the form at the exam site, or mail it to DRE (Division of Real Estate).
